Alicia Amanda Vikander (Swedish pronunciation: [aˈliːsɪa aˈmanda vɪˈkandər]; born 3 October 1988) is a Swedish actress and dancer. She began her career by appearing in Swedish television shows and films, most notably playing one of the leads in the popular TV drama Andra Avenyn and for her leading role in the film Pure, for which she won the Guldbagge Award for Best Actress. Since then she has appeared in Anna Karenina (2012), A Royal Affair (2012), The Fifth Estate (2013), Seventh Son (2014), Testament of Youth (2015), and Ex Machina (2015).
She is set to star in the upcoming films The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015), Tulip Fever (2015), Adam Jones (2015), The Light Between Oceans (2015) and The Danish Girl (2015).
Vikander was born in Gothenburg, Västra Götalands län, the daughter of Maria Fahl Vikander, an actress, and Svante Vikander, a psychiatrist. They separated when she was five months old. She has five siblings on her father's side. She trained in dance at the Royal Swedish Ballet School in Stockholm for nine years before refocusing her career on acting. Before the change, she appeared in several musicals at the Gothenburg Opera, such as The Sound of Music and Les Misérables. She decided to start an acting career after a few injuries.
Vikander began her career by appearing in a number of short films and television roles in her native Sweden. She became well known in Scandinavia for her role in the popular Swedish TV drama Andra Avenyn. She got more attention for her starring roles in the feature films Pure (2010) and The Crown Jewels (2011). With her role as Katarina in Pure, Vikander won the Rising Star Award in 2010 at the Stockholm Film Festival, the Shooting Star Award at the Berlin International Film Festival and the Guldbagge Award for Best Actress.
In 2012, Vikander gained international attention for playing a key role in the English language film adaptation of Anna Karenina alongside Keira Knightley, Jude Law and Domhnall Gleeson.The film premiered at the 2012 Toronto Film Festival and received positive reviews and grossed $69 million. That year, she also added Danish to her repertoire while co-starring on the Nikolaj Arcel feature A Royal Affair with Mads Mikkelsen. It had its world premiere at the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival and was received with critical acclaim. The film was subsequently nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 85th Academy Awards.
Vikander was named as one of the 10 Actors to Watch: Breakthrough Performances of 2012 at the 20th Hamptons International Film Festival and was nominated for BAFTA Rising Star Award in 2013. She was also the recipient of the Editor's Choice Award at the 2013 Elle Style Awards and the Best Actress Award at the 2013 Marrakech International Film Festival for Hotell.
In 2013, she starred as Anke Domscheit-Berg in The Fifth Estate alongside Benedict Cumberbatch and Dan Stevens The film opened the Toronto International Film Festival on September 5, 2013. The film performed poorly at the box office and garnered mixed critical reactions, however some critics praised the performances in the film.
In 2015, she had the leading role of iconic pacifist Vera Brittain in Testament of Youth (2015) alongside Kit Harrington.The film was released in wide distribution in the UK on 16 January 2015.Its world premiere was in The Centrepiece Gala, supported by the Mayor of London, at the British Film Institute London Film Festival on 14, 16 and 17 October 2014. Testament of Youth was well received upon its release, with critics praising Vikander's performance in particular. For her role as Vera Brittain, Vikander was nominated for BIFA Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a British Independent Film in 2014.
Vikander appeared in the Australian crime thriller Son of a Gun (2014), with Ewan McGregor and Brenton Thwaites as well playing Alice Deane in the American movie Seventh Son (2015) opposite Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore The films received with mixed and generally negative reviews respectively, however both of Vikander's performances were praised. Vikander also starred in Alex Garland's science fiction film Ex Machina (2015) with Domhnall Gleeson and Oscar Isaac as the Artificial intelligence Ava. Ex Machina was released in the United Kingdom on 21 January 2015 and screened at South by Southwest prior to the theatrical release in the United States on 10 April 2015. The film currently holds a 90% score at Rotten Tomatoes.
She will star in the Guy Ritchie-directed movie The Man from U.N.C.L.E. alongside Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer.The film is set to be released on August 14, 2015. She will also have the female leading roles in Tom Hooper's The Danish Girl (2015) with Eddie Redmayne and Ben Whishaw, which is scheduled for a 27 November 2015 release.,Tulip Fever (2015) directed by Justin Chadwick with Dane DeHaan and Christoph Waltz, and in the upcoming adaption of the novel The Light Between Oceans (2015) directed by Derek Cianfrance with Michael Fassbender and Rachel Weisz. Vikander will also have a role in the upcoming film Adam Jones (2015) with Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller.
As of 2015, Vikander lives in London. In late 2014, she began dating her The Light Between Oceans co-star Michael Fassbender.
